White Annabelle hydrangeas flowering beside a bluestone patio in a Wayne, Pennsylvania backyard

The property

This Wayne, Pennsylvania backyard was transformed with a bluestone patio, steps, and paths guiding guests to a private backyard oasis. Framed by flowering magnolias, white hydrangeas, lush grasses, and flowering perennials, it offers the perfect place to entertain, retreat, and relax.

Design goals

  • Create a usable, private outdoor room for entertaining
  • Connect the house to the rear of the property with clear paths and steps
  • Frame the patio with planting that flowers through the season

Challenges

The rear yard had no comfortable level surface and no clear route from the house, so the space went largely unused.

Plant strategy

Flowering magnolias for structure, Annabelle hydrangeas for mass and long white bloom, and grasses with echinacea and other perennials for summer color and pollinators.

Installation

Bluestone patio, steps, and paths set first to establish levels and circulation, followed by bed preparation and planting around the finished hardscape.

The finished landscape

A private backyard retreat that reads as an extension of the house and asks for very little upkeep.

Investment

Ideal for refreshing existing plantings, or adding new beds to the landscape.
