Hillside meadow planting and foundation beds surrounding a Berwyn estate home

The property

This Berwyn landscape was designed and installed with hillside meadow areas and foundation beds surrounding the home. Large trees downed in a windstorm created new opportunities on an established property, and a native plant palette was selected to provide beauty in all seasons, benefit wildlife, and minimize maintenance.

Design goals

  • Turn storm damage into a coherent new landscape plan
  • Establish hillside meadow areas that need very little intervention
  • Reset the foundation beds around the house

Challenges

Sudden loss of mature canopy changed light levels across acres of established landscape, leaving exposed hillside and beds that no longer suited their conditions.

Plant strategy

A native palette across the property: meadow grasses and perennials on the hillside, with structured native planting in the foundation beds nearest the house.

Installation

Phased across the property, prioritizing the hillside for erosion control and then rebuilding the foundation beds.

The finished landscape

A multi-acre landscape with real seasonal beauty, meaningful wildlife value, and far lower maintenance demands than before.

Investment

Full-property landscapes for multi-acre properties.
