The property
The entry to this Derwen Road home was reimagined as a garden experience. A brick entry building and bluestone walk are framed by a black metal fence, brick pillars with lanterns, and generous layered planting that changes from early summer into fall.
Design goals
- Give the front entry a clear sense of arrival
- Soften the brick architecture with seasonal plantings
- Create a layered garden that reads well from the street and the front walk
Challenges
The front of the home was dominated by hard surfaces and a narrow planting strip, leaving little room for the landscape to feel connected to the architecture.
Plant strategy
Crape myrtle, hydrangeas, and evergreen shrubs provide structure, while black-eyed Susans, alliums, caryopteris, verbena, and ornamental grasses carry color and movement through the seasons.
Installation
Beds were expanded along the fence and entry walk, then planted in layered masses to frame the bluestone path and brick entry building.

A front entry that feels welcoming, planted, and intentional from the moment you approach the property.
