Villanova Entrance

Villanova, PA · Large Landscape

Design $1,800–$2,800 · Installation $10,000–$45,000

Black-eyed susans flowering against stone masonry at the entrance to a Villanova home

The property

The entrance to this Parkes Run Lane home was reimagined with swaths of evergreen and flowering shrubs, native meadow grasses, and flowering perennials. The lush plantings welcome guests to enjoy the home and explore the landscape as it changes from season to season.

Design goals

  • Give the driveway entry a real sense of arrival
  • Plant in broad swaths rather than scattered beds
  • Keep the entry changing from season to season

Challenges

The entry was open and rocky, with boulders to clear and nothing to hold the eye on the approach to the house.

Plant strategy

Evergreen and flowering shrubs for structure, switchgrass and meadow grasses for movement, and liatris, amsonia, helenium, rudbeckia, and coreopsis for a long season of bloom.

Installation

Boulders cleared and beds built along the drive, then planted in large repeating masses following the design plan.

The finished landscape

An arrival that feels planted rather than landscaped, and looks different every month of the year.

Investment

Full-property landscapes for larger, residential homes.
